The UN denied possible withdrawal from Afghanistan in May

The official spokesperson of the UN Secretary General Stéphane Dujarric denied media statements about the possible withdrawal of the organization's mission from Afghanistan in May.

“I think there was some kind of misinterpretation or misunderstanding of what we said. We remain in Afghanistan. We intend to do everything we can to help the people of Afghanistan,” Dujarric said at a press briefing. He stressed that the UN has been constantly present in Afghanistan since the establishment of the organization, “including during the most difficult period.”

Earlier, the Associated Press, citing the administrator of the UN Development Program Achim Steiner, declared that the organization was ready to make a “heartbreaking” decision to leave Afghanistan if it fails to persuade the representatives of the Taliban movement to allow Afghan women to work in the UN structures.

On Tuesday, former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said that on May 1, UN Secretary General António Guterres will hold a meeting in Doha with special representatives for Afghanistan from different countries.
