The media named the cause of the clashes on the Iranian-Afghan border on May 27
The reason for the clash between Iranian border guards and a group of the members of the radical Taliban movement, which took place on Saturday on the border of Nimroz province of Afghanistan, was an attempt to smuggle drugs. Tasnim agency reported this on Monday, citing a source.
According to the media, “a group of drug traffickers” tried to enter Iran from the territory of Afghanistan. Iranian border guards opened fire on the perpetrators. However, the Taliban were not aware of the reasons for the shooting and, in turn, opened return fire on the border guards.
On Saturday, Tasnim reported clashes on the Iran-Afghan border that resulted in the death of an Iranian border guard. According to the deputy head of the law enforcement forces of the Islamic Republic General Qasem Rezai, the Taliban started shooting at the Sasoli checkpoint, “which led to a decisive response.” In turn, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the interim government of the Taliban Abdul Nafi Takor accused Iran of shelling the territory of Afghanistan. According to him, the losses amounted to two people killed on each side.
There have been clashes between the Taliban and Iranian border guards before, including in December 2021 and July 2022.
