A Karelia resident sentenced to 26 years in prison for attempted financing of terrorism
A court in Karelia sentenced a 22-year-old man to 26 years in prison for attempting to finance terrorism, arranging the activities of a terrorist organization and preparing an attempt on the life of law enforcement officers. This was reported on the website of the regional investigative department of the Investigative Committee of Russia.
According to the investigation, the convict was recruiting residents of Karelia to participate in hostilities as part of a terrorist organization in the Syrian Arab Republic during 2020-2021. Based on the materials collected by the FSB of Russia in the Republic of Karelia, the investigator opened a criminal case, and the defendant was detained and taken into custody.
While in custody, the man created a cell of an organization designated as terrorist in accordance with Russian legislation, and was disseminating terrorist narratives and recruiting new members, and organized fund raising for the needs of the organization. In addition, out of hostile feelings for the operational officer and the investigator, the defendant tried to arrange their murder and found a killer for that purpose. Law enforcement officers found out about his criminal intent.
