Emergence of new technologies exacerbates the threat of terrorism: UN Under-Secretary-General

The emergence of new technologies and manipulations in social media add complexity to the terrorist threat. UN Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov stated this on Monday when speaking at the High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States.

“The scale, complexity and evolving nature of terrorism require a strong and coordinated regional and international response,” Voronkov said. “The emergence of new technologies, the use of cyberspace, the manipulation of social media platforms exacerbate the threat.”

“Terrorism is also taking root on a frightening scale in conflict zones, in particular in Africa,”said the UN Under-Secretary-General.

“We have to address the complex issue associated with the return [of fighters from conflict zones]. This issue is not only about security,” he said.
