Taliban leader bans extrajudicial punishments in Afghanistan

The supreme leader of the radical Taliban movement that came to power in Afghanistan Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a decree prohibiting extrajudicial punishment in the country. This was announced by the official spokesman of the movement Zabihullah Mujahid.

“No one has the right to beat someone without a court order, even if it is a small physical impact. The court imposes punishment based on the Shariah law. Others do not have the right to beat anyone with a stick or a whip,” the Afghan TV channel TOLO News quotes him as saying.

The Taliban spokesman noted that violators of the decree would be punished.

Earlier, international organizations and media have repeatedly reported on the facts of extrajudicial reprisals by the Taliban against representatives of the former government and ethnic minorities in the country.
