Kazakh Foreign Ministry explained the reason for the postponement of meetings on Syria in Astana
On June 21, Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Tumysh explained the reason for the postponement of meetings on Syria in Astana. According to him, the Astana process successfully coped with the task.
“Presently, the situation in Syria has changed dramatically, as evidenced by the willingness of the Arab states to restore diplomatic relations with Damascus. A clear manifestation of this was the return of Syria to the League of Arab States,” Kazakhstan Today quotes him as saying.
Kanat Tumysh stressed that the negotiations in Astana led to the establishment of de-escalation zones, an end to bloodshed between the conflicting parties and a decrease in the scale of human casualties.
“In this context, the gradual ceasing of the regional isolation of Syria can be confidently interpreted as the successful fulfillment of the honorable mission of the Astana process,” he said.
The diplomat added that another meeting on the process was expected in the second half of the year.
Earlier that day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that a new platform for further meetings in the Astana format for the settlement of the Syrian crisis will need to be found.
