Court sentenced IS member to 16 years in prison for plotting terrorist attack

The Southern District Military Court sentenced an IS supporter M. Demurchev to 16 years in a strict regime penal colony for preparing a terrorist attack in the city of Karachaevsk, the press service of the court told RAPSI.

The court found that the convict joined IS in March last year and swore allegiance to its leader. After that, the man agreed to commit a terrorist act on the territory of Karachaevsk based on a discussion in a messenger.

“It has been established that on April 5 and 27, 2022, Demurchev carried out covert surveillance of the administration buildings of the Karachaevsky city district and the Karachaevsky municipal district, the Karachaevsky city court, as well as the interdistrict department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, took photos and videos and sent the information to another person,” the press office representatives stated.

The convict also researched manufacturing and use of improvised explosive devices, and then acquired the necessary components, produced an explosive and stored it at his place of residence.

The court found Demurchev guilty of committing crimes under Articles 205.5 (Participation in the Activities of a Terrorist Organization), Articles 30, 205 (Attempted Terrorist Attack), Article 205.3 (Training for the Purpose of Carrying out Terrorist Attacks), Article 222.1 (illegal possession of explosives), and Articlr 223.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Illegal Manufacture of Explosives).
