Report on IS terrorist activities in Iraq in August this year published in Kurdistan
On September 5, the Iraqi Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit published an update on the terrorist activities of the Islamic State (IS) group in the region and Iraqi provinces in August.
“In August this year, ISIS carried out eight terrorist attacks in the following provinces of Iraq:
In Salahuddin province, ISIS carried out four terrorist attacks: one ambush, two armed attacks, one shooting, resulting in the death of three people and the wounding of nine others.
Islamic State militants carried out two terrorist attacks using two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Kirkuk province, injuring seven people.
ISIS also carried out two terrorist attacks (with IEDs) in Diyala province, injuring two people,” the report said.
The Islamic State retains presence in Iraq, with its members hiding in swamps, caves and remote rural areas. They are particularly active in disputed Kurdish territories such as Kirkuk, where they have taken advantage of the security vacuum left by the 2017 takeover of the province by the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militia.
