UN: Taliban maintain good security in Afghanistan

The Taliban maintain a good level of security in Afghanistan. This was stated by the head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Roza Otunbaeva during a meeting of the Security Council.

“Authorities continue to maintain a generally good level of security. Unexploded ordnance remains a serious problem in Afghanistan, especially for children. Relations between the Mine Action Coordination Office and the UN have improved, and restrictions on any form of cooperation were lifted in October this year,” Otunbaeva noted.

However, the UN envoy drew attention to the issues of human rights.

Countries in the region are also concerned about potential threats emanating from Afghanistan.

Otunbayeva said this is especially true for Pakistan which is convinced that the neighboring country's de facto authorities have done too little to contain the Pakistani Tehrik-e Taliban, which has claimed responsibility for recent major terrorist attacks in the country.
