Islamists suspected of plotting an attack on a church detained in Vienna

Austrian law enforcement officers detained four Islamists suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in Vienna, Kurier writes. Police officers interrogate the detainees and have not released details of the investigation.

It is noted that the detainees could have been planning an attack on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the center of the Austrian capital which is one of the most crowded places during the Christmas holidays. The city police have taken security measures in public places these days.

In October, Austrian authorities raised the level of terrorist threat in the country to the maximum level. Local media wrote that this happened against the backdrop of escalation in the Middle East, as well as after a terrorist attack in Brussels, when a man opened fire with a machine gun on the busy evening square Saint-Clet. During the attack he was shouting: “Allahu Akbar.” The attack killed two Swedish citizens.
