Russia is concerned about the growing number of militants and drug production in Afghanistan

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that there was an increase in the number of ISIS militants in Afghanistan. An increase in the production of drugs with their subsequent distribution through the countries of Central Asia is also expected, a Podrobno.uz correspondent reports.

According to the Russian military agency, the issue of ensuring military security in the Central Asian strategic area was discussed at the board meeting the other day.

“The situation in the region remains difficult. The greatest threat is still the one coming from Afghanistan. Over the past year, the number of Islamic State militants has grown by 15%. Their main goal is to spread radical narratives and subversive activities on the southern borders of the CSTO,” said Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

At the same time, an almost 20 per cent increase in drug production and, accordingly, drug trafficking through the Central Asian republics is expected.

The head of the Russian agency also added that this year the main efforts in the region will be aimed at resolving crisis situations and participating in seven exercises in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

“The result of the training of troops will be the exercise of the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces of the CSTO titled “Interaction-2024”, with participation of troops of the five states,” he said.
