The CSTO conducted an exercise on stabilizing the situation in Central Asia

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) conducted a strategic command and staff training on March 12-13. The scenario of the exercise was about stabilizing the situation in the Central Asian collective security space in the face of an increasing threat of a crisis situation, according to the CSTO website.

“For the purposes of the exercise, a military-political and strategic environment has been modelled with a number of assumptions and fictional names of states and international organizations. According to the situation, they model one of the options for escalating potential threats in the organization’s area of responsibility, and a crisis situation emerges in a conditional state of the Central Asian collective security area,” the report notes.

In accordance with the plan of the exercise, the president of a CSTO member state requested assistance from the Chairman of the CSTO Collective Security Council. An extraordinary session of the Collective Security Council was conducted and a decision was made to carry out a peacekeeping operation. The Crisis Response Center and operational groups of member states of the organization have been deployed to implement this decision. During the exercise, the participants also trained in preparing proposals and draft decisions of CSTO bodies for conducting a peacekeeping operation. Particular attention was paid to the organisation of Collective Peacekeeping Forces, the procedure for their regrouping and deployment in the conflict area, as well as the provision of military and technical assistance.
