16 people killed in mine explosion in Syria
At least 16 people were killed on Saturday in a mine explosion while harvesting truffles in northern Syria's Raqqa governorate. This was reported by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
According to the Observatory, the explosion occurred while a group of people were searching for truffles in Sabha district which is a rural area in the eastern part of Raqqa governorate.
The mines were allegedly planted by remnants of the Islamic State extremist group. Among the victims were 9 women. In addition, at least 6 people were seriously injured.
Since January 2024, the monitoring center has recorded 74 cases of death from explosions of mines and other ammunition in Syria.
