UN war crime investigators stated on September 14 that it is still unsafe for Syrian refugees to return to the war-torn country because of the escalating violence and rights abuses, including arbitrary detention by government forces. In its most recent report, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria described the increasingly dire situation, mentioning fighting in several areas of the split country, the collapse of the economy and an increase in attacks by the “Islamic State” (IS, banned in Russia).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation advised the country's leaders against sending a delegation from Moscow to the possible inauguration of the government of Afghanistan established by the Taliban movement (banned in Russia), believing that an ambassador's presence in Kabul is sufficient. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the “All Russia – 2021” forum on modern journalism on September 10.
Analysis of the materials of the investigations of terrorist attacks committed in the Russian Federation allows to identify the most typical signs of their preparation. In all known cases, the locations of the subversive activities and terrorist attacks were previously studied by the terrorists and their accomplices.
RESPONSE OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO THE NEW GOVERNMENT OF AFGHANISTAN ESTABLISHED BY THE TALIBAN
The radical Islamist Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) announced the establishment of an interim government, consisting exclusively of its members, including persons on the UN “black lists” and those wanted by the FBI. The names announced on September 9, three weeks after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, leave opponents with no chance of reconciliation.
As the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan deteriorates, international partners and UN agencies are looking for ways to establish dialogue with the new authorities in Kabul to ensure access for humanitarian aid.
A recently published photo of the Turkish Defence Attache (Sinan Uyar, a Turkish Defence Attache since 2020, who also held this position from 2016 to 2018, was among the Turkish diplomatic staff who returned to the embassy in Kabul on August 27) posing in Afghanistan in local dress, with the Koran on the table and a photograph of the founder of the secular Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on the wall, does not just provide some insight in the current position of Turkey, which wants to become one of the key players in Afghanistan after Taliban takeover, but also highlights the current sentiment of a significant part of the Turkish military.
US military vehicles, including armored vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each, have been spotted in Iran after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, as reported by several social media accounts.
On August 26, an explosion took place near the airport in Kabul, and the IS-Khorasan group (banned in the Russian Federation), the branch of the “Islamic State” in Afghanistan. At the time of the attack, foreign citizens and Afghans were being evacuated from the national airport.
In August 2021, the security situation in a number of regions of Iraq was still tense, due to the destabilizing activities of both the “Islamic State” terrorist group (banned in the Russian Federation) and Shiite paramilitary groups.
