ANOTHER PARTICIPANT IN THE ATTACK ON PSKOV SPECIAL FORCES IN CHECHNIA DETAINED
During the investigation of a 21-year-old crime, a Chechnya native Magomed Alkhanov was detained. He is suspected of participating in an attack on servicemen of the 6th Company of the 104th Guards Airborne Regiment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division as part of a gang of militants led by Basayev, the press service of the Investigative Committee for the North Caucasus Federal District reported.
Alkhanov is being prepared to be charged with participation in a gang and encroachment on the lives of servicemen, as well as an armed rebellion. The investigation requests the court to arrest the suspect. Currently, his role during the attack on the company of Pskov paratroopers, which was carried out on February 29, 2000, is being established. In addition, the authorities are looking into possible involvement of the detainee in the commissioning of other crimes.
It may need to be reminded that in 2000 the paratroopers were attacked by an armed gang comprising about 2 thousand militants in the Argun Gorge of Chechnya. The servicemen kept fighting for two days. In the unequal confrontation, 84 paratroopers were killed, and only six survived. For their heroism, 22 of them became Heroes of Russia, 21 of them were awarded the title posthumously. 68 servicemen were awarded the Orders of Courage, 63 of them were awarded posthumously.
For participation in this crime, several dozen bandits from Basayev's gang have already been sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.
