AFGHAN DELEGATION, HEADED BY ABDULLAH ABDULLAH WILL GO TO DOHA FOR NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE TALIBAN
A high-ranking Afghan delegation led by the head of the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, will travel to Doha for talks with the Taliban, Afghan media reported citing informed sources.
It is noted that the delegation will also include Hamid Karzai, Mohammad Yunus Qanuni, Abdul Rashid Dostum, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Haji Muhammad Mohaqiq and other Afghan politicians.
The sources did not provide details, however they said the delegation plans to fly to Doha this Friday, July 16.
It should be noted that earlier Abdullah Abdullah and ex-President Hamid Karzai announced the imminent resumption of inter-Afghan negotiations. Abdullah Abdullah declared the government's readiness for dialogue and said that a meeting between representatives of Afghanistan and the Taliban could take place in the coming days and will be held at a different level than before.
It is still unknown who will head the Taliban delegation at the talks.
The day before, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Qatar. During his visit to Doha, he met with the negotiating teams of Kabul and the Taliban, and discussed the Afghan peace process with the Foreign Minister of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
